ENTERPRISE MOBILE SERVICES USING REST WEB SERVICES

This research was carried out as part of the requirement for a Masters Degree in Information and Telecommunication Engineering in the fall of 2015. University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of this research work is to develop a model a for handling enterprise  mobile services using REST Web Services.
The primary objectives includes:

  • To develop models that define process of handling Enterprise Mobile Service in organizations.
  • Examine the benefits of the REST web services over SOAP  web services, revealing how Restful design is simpler, more versatile and more scalable.
  • Describe the various technologies and tools that can be used to implement the models developed in this research
  • Describe  the current industry trends in Enterprise Mobile Services Management and their deficiencies.
  • Provide a description and model of the GSM Mobility Databases – the HLR, the VLR and other databases.
  • Describe the technologies required to expose information content of the Mobility Database to requesting applications
  • Demonstrate using a prototype the implementation procedure of how Mobile services can be managed using REST  Web Services
  • Highlight the security challenges that may arise in implementing the models developed and how to mitigate them.

Methodology

This research proceeds with analysis of existing methods employed in the management of enterprise mobile services. To facilitate this study, data was gathered in Microsoft Excel Format from the daily operations of a model enterprise, Saipem Nigeria. The result of the analysis was used to create a model for the handling of Enterprise Mobile Services.
Further improvement was made on this model by the application of REST web services, resulting in the development of a second Model, the 3-Layer Model.
Since two model has been developed, statistical analysis was carried out using statistical data analytics techniques to compare the performance of this two models and the results were presented.
Then we proceed to analyze the Mobility Databases namely the HLR and the VLR in the network service provider’s end examining the underlying architecture and operations.
To demonstrate how the models developed actually works to generate the results used for the second model, standard software development tools was used to create a simulated environment.
Furthermore, using other design tools, an animation was developed to visualize how mobile services is being handled.
Finally we can examine the some security challenges and how to mitigate against them 

Web-Services

Background
Today, many organizations adopts the use of mobile devices and services to the employees and partners. This devices are used to access mobile services outside the base of the organization.

Additionally, a web service may provide a functionality for interoperability between applications at the backend. This means that two application could communicate with each other bases on pre-defined rules specified in the web-service definition.

A typical example of the application of would be Online Banking which is growing in popularity in recent times. This allows a user to access his bank account information and carry out banking transactions through the internet.
Other applications of web services could be when one creates his profile using social media websites or personal blogs. A web service is used when a someone visits an ecommerce website and then uses the various services provided to purchase product and uses same to make payments using his credit card details.
